Yes, a viscose rug can be cleaned — but not the way a wool rug is cleaned, and not by most carpet cleaners. Viscose is wood pulp, not wool. Wet it the ordinary way and the fibre swells, the pile flattens into permanent grey patches, and the backing bleeds through as yellow-brown staining. That damage is usually irreversible, which is why we treat viscose as a separate service with its own method, in our own Houston workshop.
What viscose is, and why it behaves differently to wool.

Art silk, artificial silk, bamboo silk, banana silk, rayon, lyocell, modal. A rug advertised as “silk” at a low price is almost always viscose.
It is wood pulp
Regenerated cellulose — wood pulp spun into fibre. It looks like silk because it is smooth and reflective, but it shares none of silk's strength.
Wet cellulose is weak
Cellulose loses much of its strength when wet. Fibres that are stable dry will crush, fuzz and break under agitation wool shrugs off.
Yellowing
Water sitting in the fibre draws out substances that oxidise as they dry, leaving the yellow-brown cast people describe as the rug being ruined.
Flattened patches
Agitating a wet viscose pile crushes it permanently. The grey, matted look does not lift back out once dry.
Brown wicking
As it dries, dye and material from the backing travel to the surface and stay there — usually worst at the edges and along seams.

Identify
A burn test on a single tuft settles it: wool smells of burnt hair and self-extinguishes, viscose smells of burning paper and leaves a soft ash. We never assume from the label.
Dust
Most of what is in a rug is dry grit. On viscose this matters more than anywhere else — every gram removed dry is a gram that never has to be removed wet.
Wash low-moisture
Controlled moisture, no soaking, no aggressive agitation of a wet pile. This is what separates a cleaned viscose rug from a ruined one.
Dry fast and flat
Wicking happens during drying, not washing. Speed, airflow and keeping the rug flat are what prevent the brown edges.

Common questions
Can a viscose rug be professionally cleaned?
Yes, by someone who cleans it as viscose. The risk is not cleaning itself — it is being cleaned as though it were wool, with heavy water and agitation. That is what causes the yellowing and flattened patches people describe as “ruined”.
Why did my viscose rug turn yellow or brown after cleaning?
Cellulose browning. Water carried dye, or substances in the backing, to the surface and left them there as it dried. It is usually a drying failure rather than a washing one, and far easier to prevent than to reverse.
Can you get pet urine out of a viscose rug?
Sometimes, and less often than in wool. Urine salts sit in a fibre that cannot take the flushing wool tolerates, so the outcome is often partial. See pet urine and odour treatment.
Is my rug viscose or silk?
Real silk is strong wet, warm to the touch, and burns to a brittle black bead smelling of hair. Viscose is weak wet, cool to the touch, and burns to a soft ash smelling of paper. Bring it in and we will tell you for free, or see our rug identification guide.
Can a viscose rug be washed at home?
We would not. Home methods put a lot of water in and take it out slowly, which is exactly the combination that flattens and yellows the pile. Blot spills immediately with a white cloth, do not rub, and bring it in.
How much does viscose rug cleaning cost?
It depends on size and on how much work the rug needs — soiling, spot treatment, whether there is pet damage. Viscose takes more careful handling and slower drying than wool, and that is reflected in the quote.
