Hand-Knotted Rugs in Houston — Each One the Only One Ever Made
Three generations. One family. Every hand-knotted rug is one-of-a-kind — commissioned to the family's own designs or hand-selected by the Malik family, then restored by hand in Houston, and yours is the only one of its kind in existence.
Arteverk is Houston's destination for genuine hand-knotted rugs: no machine reproductions, no mass production, no warehouse closeouts. Every piece in our hand-knotted collection is a singular work — when it sells, it's gone forever. Visit us in person or shop online with full confidence.
See It Before You Buy It — Houston Showroom Viewing
Buying a hand-knotted rug is not a decision you make from a thumbnail. The pile depth, the wool weight, the way natural dyes shift in afternoon light — these things don't photograph the way they feel.
That's why we offer free in-person viewing at our Houston showroom, by appointment. Bring your room dimensions. Bring photos of your space. We'll pull every candidate piece and lay them side by side.
Can't make it in? We'll schedule a live video call with our team so you can see the rug in motion before it ships.

The Malik Family — Three Generations of Curators and Restorers
The Malik family's story in the rug trade began in Lahore in the 1970s, when the grandfather learned the craft from his own father. Three generations later, the family carries that knowledge into the Houston showroom: they source the wool and dyes, commission new pieces to their own designs in village and workshop settings, and bring a trained eye to every antique rug they choose.
That is the difference. Some Arteverk rugs are commissioned to the family's own designs; the rest are hand-selected, piece by piece, from weaving centers across the world — Persia, Afghanistan, Turkey, and beyond. Either way, a person who has spent a lifetime in the craft has judged the wool, the dyes, the knots, and the honesty of every rug — and cleaned, repaired, and restored it by hand in Houston — before it earns a place in the collection.
When you buy an Arteverk rug, you're not buying a product off a shelf. You're buying a hand-knotted, one-of-a-kind piece that was either commissioned or chosen — and restored — by people who know exactly what they're looking at.
Every Hand-Knotted Rug Is the Only One of Its Kind — This Is Not Marketing Copy
"One of a kind" is a phrase that gets used loosely. We use it literally.
Genuine hand-knotted rugs are woven on a frame by one pair of hands. When the rug comes off the loom, the pattern variations, the slight irregularities in the pile, the exact wash — they are never exactly reproduced. The same design in the same size, rewoven six months later, will not be the same rug.
Every hand-knotted piece in the Arteverk collection is catalogued with its own photography, its own dimensions to the inch, and its own provenance. When it sells, we remove it. There's no restock button. There's no "order another." If a rug speaks to you, the only question is whether it's still here.
What "Hand-Knotted" Actually Means
A hand-knotted rug is made by tying individual knots — thousands of them per square foot — around warps stretched on a vertical loom. The density of those knots (measured in KPSI: knots per square inch) determines the resolution of the pattern and the durability of the pile. A good wool hand-knotted rug, properly cared for, outlasts a generation.
A machine-made or hand-tufted rug is not the same thing. In hand-tufting, a punch gun pushes yarn through a canvas backing — faster and cheaper, but structurally different. There are no individual knots, and the latex backing that holds the pile degrades over years. You can feel the difference when you pick up the corner: a hand-knotted rug has weight.
Every Arteverk rug is hand-knotted. We show the construction, the pile, the wool origin, and the weave on every product page — because a buyer who understands what they're looking at makes a better decision, and keeps the rug longer.

Every Purchase Gives Back
We believe craft should leave the world better than it found it.
A portion of every Arteverk sale supports the Human Welfare Association (hwapakistan.org), the charity the family has helped run in their community since 2020 — funding free education, women's training, and medical care.
Frequently Asked Questions
Where is the Arteverk showroom in Houston?
Our showroom is located at 1325 S Creek Dr, Suite 200, Houston, TX 77084. We're open Monday through Saturday, 10 AM to 6 PM (closed Sunday). Viewing appointments are welcome; walk-ins are accepted when our team is available. To guarantee time with the full collection, booking an appointment is recommended.
Do you ship hand-knotted rugs outside Houston?
Yes. We ship across the United States with free standard shipping. Houston-area customers can also arrange in-home delivery and placement. Contact us for white-glove delivery quotes for large or heavy pieces.
What makes a hand-knotted rug different from hand-tufted or machine-made?
Hand-knotted rugs are built knot by knot — each one tied by hand around a warp thread. The process takes months and produces a rug that's reversible, repairable, and designed to last 50–100+ years. Hand-tufted rugs use a punch gun into a canvas backing; they look similar but wear differently and can't be repaired the same way. Every rug in the Arteverk collection is hand-knotted.
Are all your rugs truly one-of-a-kind?
Yes — approximately 98% of our inventory is single-quantity, meaning once a rug sells, it cannot be re-ordered. We photograph and catalogue every piece individually. If you're interested in a rug, the only safe move is to act — we don't hold inventory without a deposit.
Can I speak with the people behind the rug?
For buyers who want that experience, yes. The Malik family commissions part of the collection to their own designs and personally selects and restores the rest. We can connect you for a live video call about the specific piece you're considering — its materials, origin, age, and what to look for. Contact us to arrange it.
Do you offer rug restoration or cleaning in Houston?
Yes. Visit our rug restoration page for details. We offer cleaning and restoration services for hand-knotted rugs regardless of where you purchased them. Houston-area clients can arrange drop-off or pick-up.
How do I know what size to buy?
In a living room, the rug should be large enough for the front legs of all major seating pieces to rest on it — or large enough for all legs of all pieces (a fully-anchored room). Dining rugs should extend at least 24 inches beyond the table on each side to allow chairs to pull out without catching the edge. When in doubt, come to the showroom with your measurements — we'll help you think through it.
The Rug You've Been Looking For Is Probably Already Here
Arteverk carries hand-knotted rugs from Lahore, Tabriz, Oushak, and other weaving centers — Persians, Orientals, Oushaks, Bokharas, tribal pieces, contemporary interpretations of traditional patterns. Each one photographed from multiple angles, with full specs and dimensions to the inch.
