Why an Oriental rug is not cleaned like carpet

The dyes can move

Natural and older dyes — reds and deep blues especially — will migrate if the rug is wetted the wrong way. We test before any water touches it. A colour that has bled into an ivory field is not recoverable, which is why this step comes first.

Hand-spun wool holds more soil

The fibre is irregular and lanolin-rich, so it traps grit deep at the base of the pile where a vacuum never reaches. That soil has to come out dry, before washing, or you simply turn it to mud.

The foundation is not synthetic

Cotton or wool warp and weft swell and shrink with water. Controlled drying is what keeps a rug square. Rushed drying is how rugs come back with waves in them that never lie flat again.

How it works

01

Photograph the back

The back tells us the construction, and the front tells us the condition. Both, plus the size, is enough to quote.

02

We collect from your ZIP

Spring, Klein, Humble, Kingwood, Atascocita or Porter — at a time that suits you, price agreed first.

03

Dye test, then wash

Dry soil out, dyes tested, hand-washed to the fibre, dried under control. In that order, every time.

04

Delivered and laid

Back to you rolled and wrapped, and laid in the room it came from.

Common questions

Do you pick up rugs in Spring, Klein and Humble?

Yes — pickup and delivery is how nearly every north-side rug reaches us. We cover 77090, 77373, 77379, 77386, 77388, 77389, 77338 and 77365: Spring, Klein, Champion Forest, Gleannloch Farms, Humble, Atascocita, Kingwood and Porter. You never move the rug yourself.

What makes cleaning an Oriental rug different?

Three things. The dyes are often natural and can migrate if the rug is wet the wrong way. The wool is usually hand-spun and holds far more soil than machine-spun fibre. And the foundation is cotton or wool rather than synthetic backing, so it swells and shrinks with water. Carpet equipment respects none of that.

Is my rug actually Persian, or just Persian-style?

Turn it over. Hand-knotted rugs show the pattern on the back as clearly as the front, and the knots are visibly irregular. Machine-made rugs have a uniform grid and often a glued backing. Send us a photograph of the back and we will tell you what you have — free, whether or not you use us.

Can old dyes really run?

Yes, and it is the most common way a good rug is ruined by a cheap clean. Reds and deep blues are the usual culprits. We test the dyes before any water reaches the rug, because a colour that has bled into an ivory field cannot be put back.

How long does it take, and what does it cost?

Around a week to ten days for a hand-wash — the drying is controlled and cannot be rushed. Price depends on size and construction, not on your postcode. You get a quote from photographs before we collect anything.

Do you handle antique and inherited rugs?

Regularly. Older pieces are assessed before anything is committed to, and we will tell you honestly when a rug is worth less than the work — or considerably more than you assumed. Insurance and estate documentation available on request.

North Houston customers also use our pet urine & odour, mould & mildew, restoration and rug identification services. See how we wash a rug, or our Missouri City and Sugar Land pages for the south side.
