Mould in a rug is not a stain, and it cannot be sprayed away. It is a living growth feeding on the fibre itself, and by the time you can smell it, it is already in the foundation as well as the pile. It needs three things — moisture, time and something organic to eat — and a wool rug on a floor supplies all three. The only reliable treatment is to remove it physically, wash the rug through, and dry it fast enough that it cannot start again.
What mould actually does to a rug.
It eats the rug
Wool is protein and cotton foundation is cellulose. Both are food. Mould does not sit on top of the fibre the way soil does — it consumes it, which is why long-standing growth leaves permanent weakness.
The musty smell is the growth
That smell is a by-product of active growth or of spores left behind. Masking it changes nothing; if the source is still in the foundation, the smell returns with the next humid week.
It stains from underneath
Mould staining often starts on the back and works through. A rug can look faintly discoloured on the face while the foundation behind it is heavily affected.
Dry rot follows
Once the cotton warps and wefts have been fed on, they go brittle. A rug that feels stiff and makes a dry cracking sound when folded has structural damage, not a cleaning problem.
It spreads to what it touches
Pads, floorboards and the underside of furniture pick it up. Cleaning the rug alone can leave the room smelling exactly the same.
Spores travel
Rolling and moving an affected rug spreads spores through the house. If a rug is visibly mouldy, bag it or keep it isolated rather than shaking it out indoors.

Remove the growth dry
Spores and dry growth come out before any water goes in. Wetting a mouldy rug first simply drives the problem deeper into the foundation.
Wash through
Immersion washing carries what is left out of the rug rather than redistributing it. Surface cleaning cannot reach the base, which is exactly where the growth lives.
Dry fast
Mould is a moisture-and-time problem, so speed is the treatment. Controlled airflow and flat drying are what stop it restarting while the rug is still damp.

Common questions
Can mould be removed from a rug?
The growth and the odour can be removed by dry removal followed by a full immersion wash and fast drying. What cannot be undone is the damage the mould already did to the fibre — long-standing growth weakens wool and rots cotton foundations, and washing does not restore strength.
Why does my rug smell musty even after cleaning?
Because the source is usually in the foundation, not the pile. Surface or steam cleaning treats the face of the rug and leaves the base damp — which can make the problem worse rather than better. It needs a wash that goes through the rug and drying that is genuinely fast.
How quickly does mould start in a wet rug?

Can I use bleach or a mould spray on a rug?
Please do not. Bleach strips dye and weakens both wool and cotton, and consumer mould sprays sit on the surface without reaching the foundation. You end up with a bleached rug that still smells.
