Questions about this piece?
Sunlit Grove is a Heriz rug, from Afghanistan, woven in wool, measuring 17'8" × 25'9". It was tied entirely by hand, knot by knot on the loom, so no two are ever exactly alike. Its palette runs to red, blue. At this size it works beautifully as the anchor of a large living room, dining room or great room.
It is large enough to carry a whole room on its own, or to hold two separate seating areas without either one drifting off the edge.
Heriz weaving comes from the villages around Mount Sabalan in north west Iran and is known for large angular drawing and an exceptionally hard wearing build, because the wool in that region is unusually tough. Heriz designs are woven elsewhere too, and this rug's origin is in the specification.
Like every rug we carry, it comes from the Malik family, in the rug trade since 1970, and is sold direct from our Houston gallery. See it in person or on a live video call before you decide.
Faint creases from transit are normal and relax within a few days of lying flat. Slight irregularities in line and color are the fingerprints of the weaver, not flaws.
Every Arteverk rug is made the slow way — by hand, through the six steps below. No two pass through them quite the same.

Hand-spun highland wool — spun the way it has been for generations, for a pile that wears in, not out.
02
Small-batch dyeing in steaming vats — colors drawn from nature, then sun-set so they soften gracefully with age.
03
Tied by hand, knot by knot — a single rug can take months and tens of thousands of knots.
04
Hand-washed and sun-dried — the step that gives our rugs their soft hand and lived-in glow.
05
Hand-sheared — the pile clipped level by eye, bringing the design into focus.

Finished by hand — edges bound (kinara), fringe secured (zanjiri), the rug stretched and squared (takhta).
