What size runner for a hallway?
Leave 4–6 inches of floor showing on each long side, and stop the runner short of the doorways at either end rather than running it wall to wall. In a long hall, two runners with a gap read better than one that has been forced to fit.
- 2x3 and 3x5 — entry doors, landings and in front of a console
- 4x6 — a wide entry hall or a foyer that needs to hold the space
- Runners — corridors, galley kitchens and the side of a bed
- Round — under a round entry table, where a rectangle fights the shape
Why hand-knotted wool wears well here
Entryways take grit, and grit is what destroys a rug. Hand-knotted wool has a dense pile that traps dirt at the surface where it can be vacuumed away, and lanolin in the wool resists staining. These rugs are made to be walked on for generations.
