What size rug goes under a dining table?

Add 24–30 inches on every side of the table. That is the distance a chair travels when someone stands up — get it wrong and every chair catches the edge.

• Table for 4 (about 4ft) — a 6x9
• Table for 6 (about 6ft) — an 8x10
• Table for 8 (about 8ft) — a 9x12
• Table for 10–12 — a 10x14, 12x15 or larger

Round dining rugs

A round rug under a round or pedestal table is the one case where the shape should follow the table. It keeps the walkway even on every side, which a rectangle cannot do around a circle.

Wool, and why it suits a dining room

Hand-knotted wool takes chair traffic better than almost anything else: the pile is dense enough to recover, and a flat-woven or low-pile hand-knotted rug lets chairs slide instead of catching.
