What size rug goes under a bed?

• Under a king bed — a 9x12 clears the bed on three sides so you step onto wool. A large room takes a 10x14 or bigger.
• Under a queen bed — an 8x10 covers the sides and foot; a 9x12 gives a deeper border.
• Large primary bedrooms — 10x14, 12x15 and oversize rugs hold the proportions of a big room where a smaller rug would look stranded.
• Runners — one either side of the bed is the classic alternative when the bed sits against a wall of windows or built-ins.

Why wool in a bedroom

Hand-knotted wool is quiet, warm and forgiving underfoot, and it holds its pile for decades rather than crushing flat. The colour comes from the wool itself and from vegetable dyes, so it softens with light rather than fading patchily.
