The Arteverk Rug Encyclopedia · Weave Guide

If a Kerman is a flowering garden and a Bijar an iron heirloom, a Nain is a whisper of silk. Soft ivory and sky blue, with the design picked out in shimmering thread, it is among the most refined Persian rugs ever woven — and one of the most recent to join the canon. Here is what a Nain rug actually is, what makes it so fine, and how to choose one.

In short

A Nain rug is a finely hand-knotted rug from the town of Nain in central Iran, near Isfahan — one of the youngest of the great Persian names, whose weavers turned from fine woolen cloaks to carpets in the early 20th century and quickly produced some of Persia's finest. The Nain look is unmistakable: a refined Shah Abbasi arabesque medallion and scrolling vines on a soft ivory or cream ground with sky-blue and navy accents, light and elegant rather than bold. Its distinguishing trait is the silk — the motifs are often outlined in silk thread, so the design catches the light and reads crisp against the soft wool pile (fineness is graded in LA; the celebrated Habibian workshop is the most prized). The Nain rugs we carry are genuine Persian pieces, hand-knotted in Iran, mostly in wool and silk; to confirm one, check the page for Origin: Iran and a Content of Wool & Silk.

The youngest of the great Persian names

Nain is a small town on the edge of the central Iranian desert, near Isfahan, long known for weaving fine woolen cloaks (aba). When demand for those cloaks faded in the early 20th century, Nain's weavers turned their skill to carpets — and within a generation produced some of the finest rugs in all of Persia. For so young a tradition, that is a remarkable rise, and it speaks to the quality of the weaving.

The Nain look is unmistakable: a refined Shah Abbasi arabesque medallion and scrolling vines on a pale ivory ground, with sky-blue and navy accents. What sets it apart is the silk — the design outlines are often woven in silk thread, so the pattern catches the light and reads crisp and luminous against the soft wool pile.

What makes a rug a "Nain"

Ivory & sky blue

The signature Nain palette — soft cream and ivory grounds with sky blue and navy, light and elegant rather than bold.

Silk-outlined design

A refined Shah Abbasi arabesque medallion, with the motifs often picked out in silk for a gentle sheen and crisp detail.

Exceptional fineness

Closely knotted in soft wool; fineness is graded in LA (the fewer the LA, the finer), and the best — like a Habibian Nain — are connoisseur's pieces.

One of a kind

Each is hand-knotted by hand, so no two are identical.

The genuine article — woven in Iran

A true Persian Nain

Nain is the genuine article through and through. The Nain rugs we carry are genuine Persian pieces, hand-knotted in Iran — predominantly in wool and silk, spanning new weaves and the occasional vintage piece, including finer masterpiece grades.

As always, the rug's own record tells the truth: each product page states the Origin (look for Iran), the Condition and the Content (Wool & Silk). With Nain, you are buying one of the most refined of all genuine Persian rugs — exactly as described.

How to choose a Nain rug

Choose it for refined elegance

A Nain brings a room a sense of quiet luxury — its pale palette and silk sheen feel light and sophisticated, perfect for a formal living room, a study or a bedroom you want to feel serene. It is the rug to reach for when you want fine, not bold.

Mind the fineness and content

A wool-and-silk Nain has a gentle sheen and crisp detail; the finer LA grades and masterpiece pieces are connoisseur's rugs. Check the Content (Wool & Silk) and any fineness note on the page, and see the real piece before you commit — request photos in your light, or book a viewing.

Size it to suit

Nain weaves beautiful accent and area sizes as well as room-sized pieces. See our rug size guide, and because each is one of a kind, tell us your size and we'll hand-pick the closest pieces.

Caring for a Nain rug

A fine wool-and-silk Nain deserves gentle care: vacuum softly with the pile (no beater bar), rotate twice a year, use a rug pad, and blot spills immediately rather than rubbing. Have it professionally hand-washed rather than machine- or steam-cleaned — silk highlights need a careful hand. Our full rug care guide has the details.

Common questions about Nain rugs

What is a Nain rug?

A Nain rug is a finely hand-knotted rug from the town of Nain in central Iran, near Isfahan. It is famous for an elegant, refined look — a soft ivory ground with a sky-blue Shah Abbasi arabesque medallion, the motifs often outlined in silk for a gentle sheen. Nain is among the most prestigious of modern Persian weaves, and the Nain rugs we carry are genuine Persian pieces, hand-knotted in Iran.

Are Nain rugs wool or silk?

Most fine Nain rugs are woven in wool with silk — a soft wool pile with the design outlines picked out in silk, which gives that signature gentle sheen and crisp detail. Some are all wool. Each rug's content is stated on its page (look for Wool & Silk).

What does "LA" mean on a Nain rug, and what is Habibian?

LA (layeh) describes the number of threads twisted into each warp — the fewer the LA, the finer the rug, so a 6LA Nain is finer than a 9LA. Habibian was the most celebrated Nain master workshop, and a Habibian Nain is among the most prized of all. These terms describe fineness and pedigree, not a different origin.

What colors are Nain rugs?

The classic Nain palette is soft and refined — ivory and cream grounds with sky blue and navy, sometimes touches of taupe, rust or peach. The overall effect is light, elegant and timeless rather than bold.

Can I see a Nain rug before I buy?
