What makes a rug "neutral"

A neutral rug carries its interest in texture and pattern rather than colour. Two things qualify a rug for this page: a dominant colour in the ivory, beige, taupe or brown family, or an overall soft, muted tone — the washed, low-contrast palette that reads as a neutral in a room even when there is colour in the design.

Choosing a size

In a living room, an 8x10 or 9x12 lets the front legs of your seating sit on the rug. Larger and open-plan rooms take a 10x14, 12x15 or an oversize piece so the whole arrangement sits on the wool. In a bedroom, a 9x12 clears a king bed on three sides. Runners suit hallways and the side of a bed.

Every rug here is knotted by hand on a loom in wool — not tufted, not machine-made. Because each is woven individually, no two are identical, and the exact dimensions are listed on every piece.
