Pet Urine and Odour Rug Cleaning in Houston

Rug Cleaning · Pet Urine & Odour

Pet urine in a rug is three separate problems, and most cleaning only solves one of them. There is the stain you can see, the odour you can smell, and the crystalline salt left deep in the foundation that brings both back every time the room gets humid. Surface and steam cleaning treat the pile. Only a full immersion wash flushes the salt out of the base, and that is the difference between a rug that smells again in July and one that does not.

Why the smell keeps coming back after cleaning.

The salts stay behind

Urine dries and leaves crystalline salts bonded into the pile and foundation. They are not volatile, so a dry rug barely smells — until humidity reactivates them.

Houston makes it worse

This is a humidity problem as much as a cleaning one. A rug that seemed fine through winter will announce itself in a Houston summer, because the salts never left.

Deodorisers mask, they do not remove

Anything sprayed on the surface sits above the problem. Once the fragrance fades, the odour is exactly where it was.

It attacks wool

Fresh urine is acidic and turns alkaline as it breaks down. Wool is a protein fibre that does not tolerate alkalinity — the fibre itself weakens the longer it sits.

And it moves dye

Alkalinity loosens dye. That is what causes bleeding into neighbouring colours and the pale, washed-out halo around an old accident.

The floor underneath

Urine that soaked through has usually reached the pad and the floor. Cleaning the rug alone can leave the smell in the room, so we tell you what to check.

If it happened on a rug, we have likely seen it.

Soaked rather than spotted?

If the rug is genuinely wet — a large accident, a crate, an unattended weekend — treat it as water damage, not a stain. Mildew and dye-bleed set in within a day or two. See water-damage rescue and come straight in.

Four steps, all by hand, all in Houston.

01

Find every spot

Dried urine is often invisible from above. We inspect the back as well as the front, because the foundation shows what the pile hides.

02

Dry soil removal first

Grit comes out before water goes in, every time. Washing a rug full of dry soil turns the soil into mud.

03

Treat the contamination

Urine salts have to be dissolved and physically carried out of the rug with water. This is the step surface cleaning cannot do at any price.

04

Correct the pH

Returning wool to its natural acidity is what protects the fibre and the remaining dye. Controlled drying is what stops browning and wicking.

  • By hand, not by machine. Wall-to-wall carpet gets steam-cleaned; a hand-knotted rug needs hand-washing. We do it the way the rug was made to be cared for.
  • Genuine rug people. Three generations of the Malik family — we know what a Persian, an Oushak, or a silk rug can and can't take.
  • Honest about results. We tell you what will and will not come out before we start, including when the honest answer is that a rug is not worth the cost.
  • Any rug, any maker. Bought from us or anywhere else, antique or modern — we look after them all.

Common questions

Can pet urine be completely removed from a rug?

The contamination and the odour usually can, by immersion washing that flushes the salts out of the foundation. What cannot always be reversed is what the urine did to the dye and the fibre while it sat there. Those are two different questions and we answer them separately after seeing the rug.

Why does my rug still smell after being cleaned?

Almost always because the salts are still in the foundation. Surface or steam cleaning treats the pile, not the base, so the odour returns with humidity. It needs a full wash that flushes, not a treatment that sits on top.

Will pet urine permanently stain my rug?

Sometimes. Urine can strip or move dye, and where that has happened the colour is changed for good. Fresh accidents cleaned promptly usually come out completely; old ones are less predictable, and we will say so rather than promise.

How soon should I bring the rug in?

Quickly. The damage is a function of how long the urine sits in the fibre, so the difference between days and months is significant. Blot fresh accidents with a white towel, do not rub, and do not use a steam cleaner on it.

Does the pad and floor need treating too?

Often, yes. Urine that soaked through the rug has usually reached whatever was underneath. We can clean the rug perfectly and the room will still smell if the pad or the floor beneath it was saturated — so it is worth checking both.

What about pet urine in a viscose rug?

Harder, and less often fully successful. Viscose cannot take the flushing wool tolerates, so the outcome is frequently partial. See viscose rug cleaning.
