The Arteverk Rug Encyclopedia · Weave Guide

If most antique rugs whisper of palaces, a Gabbeh tells of campfires and mountain pastures. Thick, plush and gloriously pared-back, it is the cozy minimalist of the rug world — genuinely tribal, yet completely at home in a modern room. Here is what a Gabbeh rug actually is, where it comes from, and how to choose one.

In short

A Gabbeh rug is a thick, plush hand-knotted wool rug in the nomadic tradition of the Qashqai and Luri tribes of southwest Iran — bold, pared-back designs in warm, naturally dyed color. We carry new Gabbehs hand-knotted in Afghanistan in that tradition, plus genuine vintage and semi-antique Persian Gabbeh woven in Iran.

Where the Gabbeh comes from

The Gabbeh is the rug of the Qashqai and Luri nomads of the Zagros mountains in southwest Iran — woven not for sale but for the weavers' own tents: to sleep on, sit on and keep warm. The word gabbeh means "raw," "natural" or "uncut" in Persian, and that spirit defines the rug. Where a city weaver chases fine detail, a Gabbeh weaver works freely from imagination — a few bold shapes, a lone animal, a scatter of lozenges, room to breathe.

That freedom, plus a thick, high pile and warm, naturally dyed color, is exactly why the Gabbeh found a second life in modern interiors. It reads almost contemporary — simple, graphic, tactile — while carrying real nomadic soul. The new Gabbehs woven today in Afghanistan continue that living tradition.

What makes a rug a "Gabbeh"

Thick, plush pile

A high, chunky, cushioned pile that feels wonderful underfoot — the coziest of the hand-knotted rugs.

Bold, pared-back design

A few large motifs, lozenges or simple figures on open ground — minimal, graphic and full of character.

Warm, natural color

Vegetable and natural dyes in warm, earthy tones — terracotta, ochre, cedar, vermilion — with gentle color shifts.

One of a kind

Woven freehand from the weaver's imagination, so every Gabbeh is genuinely unrepeatable.

New and genuine vintage — labeled honestly

Where ours come from

The Gabbeh tradition is Persian — from the nomads of the Zagros. In our collection you will find two honest kinds: new Gabbehs hand-knotted in Afghanistan in that tradition (warm, plush, affordable), and genuine vintage and semi-antique Persian Gabbeh woven in Iran, with the soft patina of real age.

As always, the rug's own record tells you which: each product page states the Origin (Afghanistan or Iran) and the Condition (new, vintage or semi-antique). We never call a new rug an antique — we just let you choose with your eyes open.

How to choose a Gabbeh rug

Choose it for cozy and modern

A Gabbeh is the rug to reach for when you want warmth, softness and a clean, graphic look all at once. The plush pile makes it a favorite for bedrooms, reading nooks and casual living rooms, and the minimal design slots effortlessly into modern and Scandinavian interiors.

Let the color lead

Because the design is simple, a Gabbeh is really about its color — a warm terracotta, a soft ochre, a deep cedar. Pick the tone that warms your room, and see the real color before you commit: request photos in your light, or book a viewing.

Size it comfortably

Gabbehs are lovely as accent and area rugs alike. For a living room, choose one large enough for your seating's front legs; for a bedroom, a plush Gabbeh beside or under the bed is hard to beat. See our rug size guide, and because each is one of a kind, tell us your size and we'll hand-pick the closest pieces.

Caring for a Gabbeh rug

A thick hand-knotted wool Gabbeh is easy-going: vacuum gently with the pile (the high pile loves a gentle touch), rotate twice a year, use a rug pad, and blot spills immediately rather than rubbing. Our full rug care guide covers everyday care, spills and storage. When it needs more, we clean, restore and repair hand-knotted rugs by hand in Houston.

Common questions about Gabbeh rugs

What is a Gabbeh rug?

A Gabbeh is a thick, plush hand-knotted wool rug in the nomadic tradition of the Qashqai and Luri tribes of southwest Iran. Unlike fine, intricate city rugs, a Gabbeh is bold and pared-back — a few large motifs, lozenges or simple figures on an open ground, in warm, naturally dyed color. The word "gabbeh" means raw or natural in Persian, and that is exactly its charm.

Where do Gabbeh rugs come from?

The Gabbeh tradition comes from the nomadic tribes of the Zagros mountains in southwest Iran. We carry new Gabbeh rugs hand-knotted in Afghanistan in that tradition, as well as genuine vintage and semi-antique Persian Gabbeh woven in Iran. Each rug's real origin and age are stated on its page.

Why are Gabbeh rugs so thick and soft?

Gabbeh rugs are knotted with a high, plush pile and a coarser, chunkier weave than fine city rugs — that is the whole point. The result is a thick, cozy, cushioned rug that feels wonderful underfoot, which is why Gabbehs are so popular in bedrooms and casual living spaces.

Are Gabbeh rugs good for modern interiors?

Yes — Gabbeh is the most modern-feeling of the traditional weaves. Its minimal, graphic designs and warm, solid-ish color fields sit beautifully in contemporary and Scandinavian-style rooms, while still carrying genuine hand-knotted, tribal soul.

Are Gabbeh rugs naturally dyed?

Traditionally, yes — Gabbeh color comes from vegetable and natural dyes, which gives the warm, slightly heathered tones and gentle color shifts (abrash) that make each piece unique. Because each is dyed and knotted by hand, no two are exactly alike.

Can I see a Gabbeh rug in person in Houston?

Yes. Arteverk is based in Houston, TX. You can see hand-knotted Gabbeh rugs in person at our showroom or over a live video call, and we clean, restore and repair hand-knotted rugs by hand in Houston.
