The Arteverk Rug Encyclopedia · Weave Guide

Ask an interior designer for a rug that "goes with everything," and there is a good chance they hand you an Oushak. Large in scale, soft in color, and quietly luminous, it is the great diplomat of the rug world. Here is what an Oushak rug actually is, where the design comes from, how it is knotted, and how to choose one.

In short

An Oushak rug is a hand-knotted wool rug in the tradition of Ushak, a weaving town in western Turkey — large, open designs in luminous, muted palettes of ivory, gold, soft blue, sage and rose. The Oushak rugs we offer are new, one-of-a-kind pieces hand-knotted in Afghanistan in that tradition.

Where the Oushak design comes from

Oushak rugs take their name from Ushak, a town in western Turkey (Anatolia) that has been one of the world's great weaving centers since at least the 15th century. Antique Oushaks once graced European palaces and turn up in Renaissance paintings — prized then, as now, for their generous scale and their warm, sun-softened color.

What set Ushak apart was restraint. Instead of dense, intricate city patterns, its weavers drew big, confident motifs — soft medallions, angular florals, stylized leaves and vines — and gave them room to breathe on an open ground. The palette is the other signature: gentle ivories, golds, sages, soft blues and faded rose, the look of a fine old rug mellowed by a century of light.

What makes a rug an "Oushak"

Large, open scale

Big motifs with generous negative space — an Oushak is drawn to fill a room calmly, not to crowd it. The openness is the whole point.

Luminous, soft color

Ivory, gold, sage, soft blue and faded rose — gentle, sun-mellowed tones that feel light and airy rather than saturated.

Soft, lustrous wool

Hand-knotted in supple, lustrous wool with a comfortable pile and a gentle sheen that catches the light.

One of a kind

Each Oushak is dyed and knotted by hand, so no two match. Subtle color shifts across the field (abrash) are a hallmark of a genuine hand-made rug.

How an Oushak is made — honestly

As with most great rug names, "Oushak" describes a design tradition — and a tradition can be woven anywhere. Here is the distinction we hold to on every piece:

Turkish in design, Afghan-made today

The heritage

The Oushak design is Turkish, born in Ushak in western Anatolia centuries ago. That lineage is real and we celebrate it.

The rug in your home

The new Oushak rugs we sell are hand-knotted in Afghanistan in that tradition — confirmed by each rug's own origin record. They are new pieces, not antiques, and not "made in Turkey."

We say this plainly because much of the market doesn't. A new Oushak hand-knotted in Afghanistan is a beautiful rug on its own terms — there is no need to pass it off as a Turkish antique. Where we do carry genuine antique or vintage pieces, we label them as such, with their real origin.

Our role is specific too: the Malik family sources the wool, commissions and enables the workshops that weave these lines, curates genuine vintage pieces, and restores and repairs rugs by hand in Houston. We do not claim to tie every knot ourselves — we make sure the right hands do.

How to choose an Oushak rug

Let it set the tone

An Oushak's soft palette makes it one of the easiest rugs to design around — it gives a room a calm, collected foundation rather than a focal point that demands attention. It is the natural choice for a light, layered, lived-in look.

Go generous on size

Because the pattern is large and open, an Oushak rewards a generous size — big enough that your seating's front legs rest on it, with floor showing around the edges. Most of our Oushaks are room-sized (8×10 and up), perfect for living and dining rooms. See our rug size guide for room-by-room diagrams, and because each one is one of a kind, tell us your size and we'll hand-pick the closest pieces.

It plays well with others

Modern, transitional, traditional, boho — the muted color and open drawing let an Oushak settle into almost any scheme, which is exactly why designers keep one in their back pocket.

Caring for an Oushak rug

A hand-knotted wool Oushak ages beautifully with simple care: vacuum gently with the pile, rotate twice a year, use a rug pad, and blot spills immediately rather than rubbing. Our full rug care guide covers everyday care, spills and storage. When it needs more, we clean, restore and repair hand-knotted rugs by hand in Houston.

Common questions about Oushak rugs

What is an Oushak rug?

An Oushak rug is a hand-knotted wool rug in the tradition of Ushak, a weaving town in western Turkey. It is known for large-scale, open designs — soft medallions, angular florals and stylized motifs — in luminous, muted palettes of ivory, gold, soft blue, sage and rose. Most Oushak rugs woven today, including ours, are hand-knotted in Afghanistan in that tradition.

Where do Oushak rugs come from?

The Oushak design comes from Ushak in western Turkey, a celebrated weaving center for centuries. The new Oushak rugs we sell are hand-knotted in Afghanistan in that tradition — new, one-of-a-kind, and described by their real origin on every product page. They are not antiques and not made in Turkey.

What is the difference between an Oushak and a Ziegler rug?

Both are large-scale and softly colored, which is why they are often confused. An Oushak (from Turkey) tends to be more open and a touch more geometric, with luminous, airy color. A Ziegler (from the Persian Sultanabad tradition) leans more curvilinear and floral, with earthier, muted tones. If you want airy and open, look Oushak; if you want flowing arabesque pattern, look Ziegler.

Are Oushak rugs hand-knotted?

Yes. Every Oushak rug in our collection is hand-knotted in pure wool — tied by hand, knot by knot — and is one-of-a-kind, with origin and construction stated on its page. Because each one is knotted by hand, no two are exactly alike.

Why do interior designers love Oushak rugs?

Oushak rugs have soft, neutral palettes and an open, large-scale pattern, so they fill a room without overwhelming it and pair effortlessly with both modern and traditional interiors. That versatility — and the quiet, sun-faded elegance of the color — is why designers reach for them so often.

Can I see an Oushak rug in person in Houston?

Yes. Arteverk is based in Houston, TX. You can see hand-knotted Oushak rugs in person at our showroom or over a live video call, and we clean, restore and repair hand-knotted rugs by hand in Houston.
