The Arteverk Rug Encyclopedia · Weave Guide

A Bakhtiari rug is a Persian garden you can stand on. Its most famous design lays the field out as a grid of little compartments, each holding a tree, a flower, a bird — a whole walled garden, seen from above. Sturdy, warm and full of character, it is one of the most beloved of the Persian village weaves. Here is what a Bakhtiari rug actually is, where it comes from, and how to choose one.

In short

A Bakhtiari rug is a sturdy, hand-knotted wool rug from the Bakhtiari tribal region of western Iran — the Lur pastoralists of the Zagros mountains in Chahar Mahal and Bakhtiari province. It is most famous for the garden-panel (khesti) design, which divides the field into a lattice of square or diamond compartments, each holding its own motif — a cypress, a weeping willow, a flowering shrub, a vase or a bird — evoking the Persian chahar bagh, the walled paradise garden seen from above. Woven in warm, saturated color (terracotta, indigo, gold, ivory and green) on a thick, hard-wearing pile, it carries the directness of village weaving rather than city formality; that garden layout and rugged wool are what set it apart. We carry genuine Persian Bakhtiari woven in Iran and new pieces hand-knotted in Afghanistan, so to know which you're getting, simply check the Origin stated on every product page.

Where the Bakhtiari comes from

The Bakhtiari are one of Iran's great tribal confederations — Lur pastoralists of the Zagros mountains, who for centuries migrated their flocks between summer and winter pastures across what is now the Chahar Mahal and Bakhtiari province in western Iran. Their rugs were woven in the villages around Shahr-e Kord, and they carry the directness and warmth of tribal weaving rather than the fine formality of a city loom.

What sets a Bakhtiari apart is its love of the garden. The signature khesti design divides the field into a lattice of square or diamond panels, and fills each one with a different motif — a cypress, a weeping willow, a flowering shrub, a vase, a bird. It is the Persian chahar bagh, the four-quartered paradise garden, translated into wool. Other Bakhtiari rugs use a bold central medallion, but the garden is the design the name is known for.

What makes a rug a "Bakhtiari"

The garden panels

A grid of compartments, each holding its own tree, flower or motif — the unmistakable Bakhtiari "garden" (khesti) layout. Bold medallion versions exist too.

Warm, saturated color

Terracotta and brick red, indigo and navy, gold, ivory and green — often a different shade in each garden panel, glowing and rich.

Sturdy tribal wool

Thick, hard-wearing wool on a strong foundation — Bakhtiari rugs are village weaving built to take real life.

One of a kind

Each is woven by hand, often from memory, so no two gardens match. Small variations are the mark of a genuine tribal rug.

How to choose a Bakhtiari rug

Choose it for warmth and character

A Bakhtiari brings a room warmth, color and a sense of story — the garden panels reward a closer look without ever feeling fussy. It suits traditional and farmhouse interiors beautifully, and the graphic grid reads surprisingly well in modern rooms too.

Lean on its toughness

This is village weaving built to last. The thick wool and busy pattern make a Bakhtiari a smart, forgiving choice for living rooms, dining rooms, hallways and homes with kids and pets.

Size it to anchor the room

The garden design looks best with room to breathe — large enough that your furniture's front legs rest on it, with the panels clearly visible. Bakhtiari also weaves wonderful long runners. See our rug size guide, and because each is one of a kind, tell us your size and we'll hand-pick the closest pieces.

Caring for a Bakhtiari rug

A hand-knotted wool Bakhtiari is built to last with simple care: vacuum gently with the pile, rotate twice a year, use a rug pad, and blot spills immediately rather than rubbing. Our full rug care guide covers everyday care, spills and storage.

Common questions about Bakhtiari rugs

What is a Bakhtiari rug?

A Bakhtiari rug is a sturdy, hand-knotted wool rug from the Bakhtiari tribal region of western Iran. It is most famous for the garden-panel (khesti) design — the field divided into a grid of compartments, each holding a tree, flower or motif, like a walled Persian garden seen from above — woven in warm, saturated color on a thick, hard-wearing pile.

What is the garden (khesti) design?

The khesti or garden design divides the rug into a lattice of square or diamond panels, each filled with a different motif — a cypress, a weeping willow, a flowering shrub, a vase or a bird. It evokes the Persian chahar bagh, the four-quartered walled garden, and is the signature Bakhtiari layout. Bakhtiari rugs also come in bold medallion designs.

Are Bakhtiari rugs Persian?

The Bakhtiari design is Persian — from the Bakhtiari tribe of the Zagros mountains in western Iran. Many of the Bakhtiari rugs we carry are genuinely woven in Iran (we label them Origin: Iran); others are new pieces hand-knotted in Afghanistan in the Bakhtiari tradition. Each rug's real origin is stated on its page.

Are Bakhtiari rugs durable?

Yes — Bakhtiari rugs are tribal village weaving at its sturdiest, knotted in thick, hard-wearing wool. That toughness, plus the busy garden pattern that hides everyday wear, makes them a great choice for living rooms, dining rooms and high-traffic spaces.

What colors do Bakhtiari rugs come in?

Bakhtiari rugs are warm and richly colored — terracotta and brick red, indigo and navy, gold, ivory and green — with each garden panel often in a different shade. Because each is dyed and knotted by hand, the exact colors vary piece to piece.

Can I see a Bakhtiari rug before I buy?

Yes — we'll walk you through any piece on a live video call, and every rug ships free with easy returns.
